I'm using excel for a statitics course. While I have figured out how to create some basic formulas, such as determining probability, does excel actually sove the formula that you have put in to the spreadsheet? And if it doesn't, is there a way to get excel to solve it manually?

it does calculate things, but I am not quite understanding your question. are you wanting it to show the calculations it does?

Yes. Not oly do I want it to show the formula, but I also need it to show the result.

Yes, unless you do something wrong when entering the formula, excel will solve the formula. You will know when you have done something wrong either because of a dialog that excel gives you stating the problem such as the circular reference dialog, or if while you have the spread sheet containing the formula in value view which I will talk about a little later, and you do not see a number in the cell the formula is in. I would also like to point out that if you already have all the numbers you need for the formula in the spread sheet, you can use the cell references such as d1, e3, f2, etc., and they will work just as well. As far as seeing the formula and the result of the formula, you see the results of the formulas in value view; you see the formulas in formula view. You can toggle back and fourth by holding down the control key, pressing the ` key, and letting them both go. For example, if I have the formula 5+5, in value view, I will see 10 in whatever cell I put the formula in, and jaws will say has formula. In formula view, I will see 5+5. You can save the workbook in each of these views as long as you change the name a little. Also, if you want to stay in value view but also want to see a formula(s), jaws has a say formula command which I can't remember but would be easy to look up; there's also another way which is the way I use to do it. When on the cell with the formula you want to see, press f2. This takes you in to the cell; you can read the formula with standard reading commands, edit it, and also read and edit any other cell.
